Photographing Art

Many Artists try to photograph their own art for reproduction purposes for Web or Print but most find it very difficult. Getting a photo is the easy part. Getting sharp images that reproduce accurate colours without glare or reflections is the difficult part. This demonstration will introduce you to the camera settings and lighting setup required to give you great consistent results.

Understanding Lightroom File, Folder and Catalog Management (2 Hours)

Ever lose a file or folder in Lightroom? Not sure where your files are or how they disappeared? Imported some files only to find out they are not there? As great as Lightroom is there can be some challenges, specially to new Lightroom users. And now with Apple dropping support for Aperture, Lightroom is seeing an increase in new users.

Come and find out about Lightroom File, Folder and Catalog Management. What are Catalogs? How do they relate and interact with Files and Folders. We will discuss;

- How to deal with and import existing Files and Folder Structures
- How to import new Images
- How to backup Images and the Catalog! (Both need to be backed up)
- Importing Catalogs (from your travel Laptop)
- Exporting Catalogs and creating Archives (Freeing up Space on your computer)
- How to Automate some things
- Gotcha’s to watch out for

Depending on time we will look at Meta Data, EXIF Data, Key Wording and other tools to help you sort and organise your images.

Your Computer, Digital Asset Management and Lightroom CC (2 Hours)
This class discusses your computer, how to optimize for speed and how to configure it for stability, backups and ease of use. We look at DAM processes specific to Adobe Lightroom 5.3 and do a quick overview of version 5 and its new features. Great for advanced Lightroom users and for those new to Lightroom.

Keep a list of your Shortcuts handy to help you memorize them. Use this DOC to help you get started!  (Beginner to Advanced)

What kind of photographer are you? Time to set goals for photographic success! Join Francois for this thought provoking seminar as you address key questions and obstacles that may be standing in the way of your photographic growth.Francois will not only challenge your thinking and photographic behavior, but will also talk about strategies and available resources to take your work to the next level, whatever kind of photographer you are.  (Beginner to Advanced)

Using PocketWizards with Portable Flash and Studio Lights (2 Hours)
PocketWizards have changed the way photographers work by simplifying everyday lighting and freeing the photographer of unruly cables. PocketWizards allow for full control of all the lighting directly from the camera (Canon and Nikon) and allows for Mixed Lighting to be used.

Other great features allow you to directly trigger various cameras simultaneously and use Sekonic Light Meters to control lighting. Advances in technology (Optimized High Speed Sync and Hyper Sync) have given the photographer greater control than was ever possible before.

Digital Asset Management in Lightroom (2 Hours)
Digital Asset Management (DAM) is a term that refers to everything one does with image files from the point of capture in camera onward to the display of the image in print or in digital format. This includes transferring, backing up, organizing, attaching metadata, sorting, rating, adjusting, proofing, archiving and more. Understanding the principles of Digital Asset Management (DAM) will help you design a workflow that is secure and efficient, and can prevent loss of images.

Proper DAM can secure, simplify and speedup the process of creating your final images and in the process will free you to concentrate on your photography and your art.  (Beginner to Advanced)

Blogging for Photographers (2 Hours)
Blogger is a blogging site owned by Google. It ties in with Google Mail and with Google’s photo site Picasa. Learn the How's and Why's of Blogging, Domain Names, Registrars, Domain Hosts and other essential skills including a look at other blogging sites like WordPress and Photography sites like NetShelter and SmugMug.

A Hands-On Creative Evening of Photography (2 Hours)
Attendees are asked to bring their camera preferably with a Macro Lens and their tripods to this fun and creative evening of adventurous photography. Different stations will be setup where different creative artistic subjects will be available to photograph.

Although some excellent images may be garnered from this hands-on workshop, the purpose of this class is to teach new techniques for photographers to take home for shooting indoors on cold wintery days. We will play with smoke, water, bubbles, ice, inks, reflective surfaces and other easily and cheaply available props. Lighting is supplied and includes single Flash units and Studio Lighting.  (Beginner to Advanced)

An Intimate Evening with the Epson 3880 (2 Hours)
This informal workshop discusses all aspects of digital photographic printing. An excellent class for ALL printer owners and those wanting to learn more before buying a printer and printing higher quality images and fine art prints!

Topics will include Printers, Paper Brands & Types, Inks, Terminology, Paper Handling, Care of Prints and Printers, Fine Art Printing, Color vs B&W, Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, ICC Profiles, Soft Proofing, Monitor Calibration and Digital Printing Workflow, Drying Prints and so on. Lots of great tips and important information.

This class can be customized for a Beginner level where we cover all the Printing Basics and then get into printing or can be done as an Intermediate/Advanced Class skipping the basics to get into more advanced topics fairly quickly.  (Beginner to Advanced)

Tour Europe and see some amazing sites and ancient cities while improving your photography skills. Fly in to Frankfurt and wind your way to France by Coach where you will spend the last 5 Days in Paris! Max Class size of 12. The 2013 class was sold out!

Paris and Southern France (TBA)

A 12 day photo tour of Paris, Southern France and Monaco. The 2013 class was sold out!

Fall Colors in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada or in the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec, Canada (Next Date TBA)

A full two day Workshop in Cape Breton Island (or the Laurentians) during the peak of the Fall Colors. The travel time also co-insides with the Cape Breton Fall Music Festival. Landscape Photography, Travel Photography, HDR, Life and People and hopefully some Wildlife! In class sessions as well as field trips. A Busy two day schedule. (All Levels) Currently not scheduled. Birds of Florida (Postponed to January 2015)

4 days of Bird Photography in Florida including the everglades. A guided trip to local bird hot spots that depending on the season can include Burrowing Owls, Great White Egrets, Ospreys and other great birds.

This Workshop is scheduled to co-inside with the largest Bird Festival in North America, "The Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival" held in late January of every year. (All Levels)

Vancouver Through Photography (Next Date TBA)

Ok, not a workshop abroad, but 'from' abroad. A small group (Up to 15 people) customisable 1 to 5 day itinerary of photography in and around Vancouver with classes, workshops, studio and location shoots. Image reviews and critique. Improve your photography while seeing Vancouver.

Special arrangements can be made to include day outings to Victoria, the Gulf Islands and Whistler (home of the 2010 Olympics). For more details and information please inquire.

Private Lessons

I am available to teach private lessons in Photography Skill (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced) and I can also do Subject Specific lessons like Bird, Wildlife, Landscape, HDR, Night, Sports, Fashion and other subjects.

Although I do not do "Computer" related classes or workshops, as I do computers all day, I am available for private lessons in Adobe Lightroom (Beginner to Advanced), Photoshop Basics, Digital Workflow and Printing.

Judging & Critique

I am a CAPA Trained and Certified Judge. I have a well balanced approach to judging all types of images and photography. I continue to try to improve my Judging Skills by taking judging and non-judging related workshops and reading on Art, Photography and Critique and by Judging on a regular basis.

My past professional status which included Press, Portraits, Fashion, Weddings and Sports Photography and my current photographic activities that includes various photographic subjects including Fine Art, Bird & Wildlife, Landscape, HDR, Street Photography and Teaching Workshops helps in rounding out my judging skills.

As a judge I am always open to Judging criticism and I am always open to your input. I am always open to discussing my critique and any scores I may have awarded. Please let your club members know they may approach me with questions.
